City Rats

I was actually quite looking forward to this film. Released on the 22nd April it documents some rather niche elements of London life. Then I found out Danny Dyer is in it. This drags the levels of anticipation down dramatically, but probably still worth a watch.

Woody Allen's 'Manhattan' is one of my favorite films depicting New York City. The cinematography is spot on. It really captures the essence of New York. Whilst trawling through youtube I stumbled across this fantastic pastiche of Jack Kerouac reciting 'Visions of Cody' and 'On The Road' set to the opening sequence of Allen's 1979 classic.

So The Notorious B.I.G bio-pic is soon to be upon us. Now I do hold reservations with regard to this film, however, with the success of '8 Mile', this could be just as important a film for Hip Hop. Yet, one must remember the awful Fiddy bio-pic, I've got a feeling 'Notorious' will fall somewhere in between the two movies. I hope not, as Biggie's debut album 'Ready To Die' is my favorite rap record of all time. His depiction of those early years before rap are so vivid, providing its own unique cinematic experience for the listener. I know a lot of people have questioned Biggie's integrity as a "real" hustler, especially in the wake of Nick Broomfield's documentary, and those questions are going to duly arise once again. This could be a great film, not of 'Goodfellas' or 'Casino' proportions, but in terms of Rap Cinema it could be epic. I do have my doubts and will view with a smash of salt and the most sincere of skepticism. Lets hope it does both Biggie and his music the justice they deserve.

The Wackness

The premier of Sir Ben Kingsley's new movie 'The Wackness' is happening in London tonight, I'm not going, unfortunately, I’d quite happily spend the evening at a big glitzy showbiz affair but anyways the commute home beckons and I can't wait to see it. The film has everything I’m looking for in a fun summer flick: heavy soundtrack, great cast, cool theme, so it should be alot. I love films set in New York City, reminds me of the great escapades I’ve had out there and the rapport I personally have with the home of Hip Hop. The Big Apple inspires me, I feel vitalised, refreshed, energized, excited, and alive within its labyrinth of mammoth sky scrapers and busy avenues. As people may yearn for the shopping spress in Manhattan, the Brownstones of Brooklyn are a much more vibrant enclave for my imagination. Anyways I wish I was in New York right now, so all my NYC crew hold it down for me out there I’m thinking of you as I write this.

This is one of my favorite films of all time.  The colors are so vivid and the soundtrack is remarkable, really adds to the suspense and complements the story perfectly.
